Report about my one year of social work with the foundation “Balance y Harmonia” in San Marcos in 2004

Introduction

In San Marcos some years ago Dennis Lortie and some other helpers examined the percentage of Dyslexia and found an amount of 38 %. A very probable explanation for this is that the mothers carry their babies for a too long time bounded on their back. Like this the children do not crawl, which is a very important crossing over movement because it activates the co-operation of the two halves of the brain. The women are behaving like this, because they live at steep mountains, where are not a lot of surfaces for crawling and inside the houses there are often scorpions that could get dangerous for the child.  

This was the beginning of the project here in Guatemala that a group of volunteers made for themselves the main objective to diagnose and correct Dyslexie with methods of educational Kinesiologie. Important became also the examination and correction of eyes, ears and the brain body co-ordination (cranial points). If the information of eyes, ears and cranial points are not passing on well to the brain, the children are not well concentrated and fast tired. This often also can be a source for learning difficulties. Furthermore it can be that the child is not in harmony with individual letters or numbers, words like "school", "teacher", "mathematics", "reading", "writing" etc. with one of the sensory organs or also with colors, because a negative experience unconsciously left a restraining programming. This can be also diagnosed and corrected. In addition the project expanded on further methods such as BrainGym and the work with special school material to train logic thinking, spatial orientation, remembering sequences, series which is all basic for learning and developing of the child.

When I started to work for the foundation there were two local teachers that were educated by Dennis Lortie in pedagogic Kinesiology and that were familiar with the school materials that were used to make additional training in logic thinking, sequences, series, spatial orientation …  

In the first three month I assisted at the classes the native teachers were giving to the students in order to receive a first impression of the pupils, their culture, their personality, their social behaviors and their way of learning. In each case 2-4 pupils were taken out of the classroom for 20-30 minutes, in order to help and train them particularly with exercises of Kinesiologie and additional school materials of the association. Like this I got an overview of the teaching methods, the teaching contents and exercises of the teachers of our association. 

During this time and also later once a week a training day took place, so that the native teachers and I received a basic knowledge about educational, emotional and physical Kinesiology and BrainGym. First one of the local teachers was teaching me about pedagogic Kinesiology. Then Dennis Lortie taught us the emotional and physical part and about BrainGym.
On compact weekends I visited Reiki courses and achieved the title "Reiki master".

Like this I received a basic training, in order to work with the children with educational Kinesiology, BrainGym and some special school materials and also, in order to offer for adults, treatments in Reiki and Kinesiology.

In the second quarter I also began to work with small groups of pupil using the knowledge that I had received in the first months. In addition we worked on adjusting school material to the indigenous culture that Dennis Lortie brought from Canada. 

Several times weekly I was leading classes in voice improvisation for adults. With a relaxation phase at the beginning, sound massage and improvising with vowels and overtones we achieved a meditative state, which liberates the power of self healing and creativity.  

In the third quarter I was also a lot included into organizational work. We began to structure and analyze the exercises and write down their educational value. The idea was to make them more transparent and to offer the collected material in the Internet. Besides that we wrote about the history and the experiences of the association in Guatemala that also gets illustrated by pictures. This work needs to be finished by Dennis Lortie.

One morning weekly I led three music groups with five children each. Therefore I developed dances for children, which contain exercises from the Kinesiology in order to improve the integration of the two halves of the brain. Besides we made games that contained improvisation with music, which are training social, creative musical and emotional abilities.   

Together with Dennis Lortie I prepared and accomplished a seminar for interested Gualtemaltecans from the capital (psychologists, teacher and others who are interested in alternative healing therapies). This enabled me to lead independently seminars in Kinesiology. I began to offer in addition Reiki treatments and courses. These activities started to partly finance my living costs, which before I maintained out of my savings.

The school year ends in the middle of October. The children have holidays up to the end of the year, so that our activities in the school also ended at that time. Dennis Lortie, with who I had worked together until this time, left San Marcos. So I was independently taking care of some duties to finish the year. 

The association received an office, in which I organized all school material and where we can have team meetings now. 

I gave independently a course in educational Kinesiology for volunteers of another project in the north of Guatemala and a course in emotional Kinesiology for Guatemaltecans in the capital. Besides I still offer Reiki treatments and courses. In addition I participated in a massage course, which I also offer to tourists now. 

In January, when the school begins, I will contribute to make the project continue also without Dennis Lortie and without me. I will leave Guatemala in the end of January. That means that it needs new responsible persons, which take care of the organization and the training of the pupils. At the beginning of January a friend from Germany comes back to San Marcos, who is very interested in taking over of the organizational duties. There are two other person interested in volunteering and one of the local teachers of the last year would like to continue working with the foundation. He is very important now for the foundation because he will be the only person that is experienced in doing the work with the children. He is a very good teacher and a very trustable person.

So I will concentrate on teaching the three volunteers the basic knowledge in Kinesiology and BrainGym and will explain them the materials and introduce them how to find them in the office. I will present my German friend to the director of the school and to the local teachers that would like to continue working with the foundation.

Personal point of view to the outcome of the one year

A big question with projects with other cultures for me is, how effective they really are most of all if projects are limited for a period of time. I brought myself for one year into this culture and did an important work with a very small part of the many children. My main objective was, and in this point Dennis Lortie and I were in total agreement, to transmit for the children the message that they are valuable and equal humans, beings of love. This I tried to express with my way of thinking and my behavior towards them. I tried to let them make decisions and let them express their wishes so they can unfold. Besides I gave them with my person and particularly as a woman, an example, which is very different from what they know from their own culture. I hope in this way I could make a contribution for the personal development of these children. But to really change something for this culture it has to continue for these children and also all the other ones we still did not work with. Dennis Lortie collected a big amount of material together that is waiting to be used.   
To my own development the indigenous people contributed a lot. I changed my points of view regarding consumption, wealth and the relationship first to the third world. Things such as possession, career and security, lost for me a lot of meaning. A lot more important are for me now, the enfoldment of my inner freedom and love for all humans. I appreciate and want to thank a lot that I could be part of this foundation where I learnt so many good skills and could make so many important experiences that changed my life.
